STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — August 10, 2026 — As City Access New York marks its 20th anniversary, the organization today announced the adoption of a new mission statement that both honors its history and how it’s growing to provide the outcomes it strives to achieve for individuals, families, and communities across New York City.
The updated mission statement is:
“At City Access New York, we empower individuals with visual, intellectual and developmental disabilities to reach their fullest potential through high-quality, person-centered services and supports that promote independence, inclusion, employment, and meaningful community engagement.”
Since its founding, City Access New York has promoted lifelong access to information, programs, and services for New Yorkers of all abilities, helping individuals with developmental and sensory disabilities pursue greater independence and integration into their communities. The new mission statement builds on that legacy while using language that better reflects the organization’s continued evolution, expanded person-centered approach, and deepened focus on inclusion, employment, and meaningful community engagement.
“This updated mission statement is both a reflection of where City Access New York began and a clear statement of where we are going,” said Sophia Rossovsky, Executive Director of City Access New York. “Our work has always centered on removing barriers and creating opportunities. Today, we are expressing that commitment in a way that more fully captures the dignity, goals, talents, and potential of every person we support.”
The updated mission statement emphasizes four priorities that have become central to City Access New York’s work: independence, inclusion, employment, and meaningful community engagement. It also affirms the organization’s commitment to high-quality services and supports that are responsive to each person’s strengths, choices, and goals.
City Access New York’s programs have grown alongside the changing needs and aspirations of the people it serves. Through community-based supports, day habilitation, respite, employment services, internships, social and recreational opportunities, and partnerships across New York City, the organization continues to help participants build skills, strengthen connections, and take part more fully in community life.
“As our organization has evolved, so has our understanding of what access truly means,” said Ryan Dillon, Director of Program Services. “Access is not only about opening doors; it is about ensuring that individuals have the support, respect, and opportunities they need to define success for themselves.”
The new mission statement will guide City Access New York’s communications, program planning, partnerships, and continued efforts to advance a more inclusive New York City for individuals with visual, intellectual, and developmental disabilities.
