Perspectives – A Conversation with Harilyn Rousso

RoussoHonored in 2003 as one of ten “exemplary” women in the United States by the National Women’s History Project, artist and activist Harilyn Rousso recently spoke with CANY about her lifelong commitment to improving the lives of women and girls with disabilities, and about her hope that young people can one day “claim disability without the stigma.”

CANY is most proud to continue our new on-line project, Perspectives, with Ms. Rousso’s forthright challenge to the status quo. Click here to listen to the podcast, or here to read the transcript of Perspectives – A Conversation with Harilyn Rousso.

And don’t forget that you can subscribe to the entire series at iTunes.

“Every woman in the group could tell me the same story. This self-loathing about my body is not just a disability issue, it is a women’s issue. It really created for me a sense of being a woman. Being in the women’s community made me re-think the way I thought about my disability.”

Adapted Arts & Science – Citywide Science Scholarships

SummerIt’s not summer without camp!

City Access New York extends a very special thank you to partners Urban Park Rangers and Rocking the Boat for making sure our kids had another great summer. For six wild weeks, kids from Educational Vision Services and the Grace Foundation had the chance to get outside and explore NYC’s extraordinary parks and waterways.

With the Rangers and Rocking the Boat’s educators, CANY’s Science Scholarship program expanded inclusive science camps in Brooklyn, Staten Island and the Bronx. Together, campers with and without autism and visual disabilities did everything from seining salt marshes, to collecting knotwood in handmade boats, to rowing the Bronx River. Good wet hands-on fun!

CANY is grateful for ongoing support from the J.E. and Z.B. Butler Foundation and for support from the Foundation for the Supporters of the Disabled. Their generosity makes this unique program possible.
